What is buttress roots?

Buttress roots are large, wide, and usually shallow roots that extend out from the base of a tree trunk. They provide added support to the tree by securing it in the ground and preventing it from falling over. These roots are typically found in species of trees that grow in environments with shallow soil or steep slopes. Buttress roots are commonly found in tropical rainforests and mangrove swamps, where they help trees to withstand the strong winds and heavy rainfall. Some trees, such as the American Bald Cypress, have buttress roots that grow above the water to help anchor the tree in the marshy ground. The shape and size of buttress roots vary depending on the species of tree and the conditions in which they grow.
